Facebook Page

Creating a professional Facebook page can be very useful. A page such as Shelley Du's, or the one sampled above, can be created as free advertisement of yourself for future and potential employers. Having an online resume allows employers easy access, even if they are across seas. Nowadays, the internet is relatively easy to gain access to. With this, you are able to plan for careers in places other than your hometown. In addition, you are able to keep up with technological advancements by having an online page. It is an easy way of presenting your skills and goals to companies you are thinking of investing a career in.

Although having an online professional profile can have its perks, if not used properly, your online information can backfire on your professional appearance. As seen in the provided link, privacy settings must be carefully attended to. With this, security settings (such as who is able to comment) must also be carefully watched. Though there can be a downside with having your information posted online, it can still be strongly argued that providing online resources to potential employers outweighs the consequences of online profiling when used properly.

  1. Hello Loana,

I like the idea you brought up of being able to prepare for a job in a location different from the one that you are located in by having an online C/V of sorts on Facebook. While faxing and mailing a C/V to potential employers are always alternate options, providing accessible information online can often be more efficient and convenient for potential employers. At the same time, I agree that privacy is a huge issue - especially on Facebook. There's a lot of fine print associated with what we post on Facebook when we set up an account and sign up for apps, so it's important that we make sure the information we are providing has a low chance of being used for any other purpose than what is intended.

Well done on the Facebook page!

  2. I agree that having a professional Facebook page is a create way to advertise yourself to potential employers. Making sure privacy settings are appropriately set for this page is something I had never thought about before! Much like your personal page, the professional one should be set depending on who you would like to view your information. Although the presentation of personal information may be risky online on sites such as Facebook, I agree that having this resource for potential employers outweighs the negatives.

  3. Privacy issues was also a concern for me when I created my professional facebook page. This is why I did not include contact information or my reference's information. I think it is a great idea to be in an online community and to make yourself more visible to potential employers but I think it may be difficult to find the line between being visible and ensuring privacy.
